Emergencies

Emergency Appointments

If you are experiencing any eye or vision problems we offer an eye casualty service, where in an emergency we will attempt to fit you in our clinic on the same day.  Your optometrist is your first line of contact for all eye issues.

The following may indicate an emergency requiring immediate attention:

  • Double vision (seeing two things at once)
  • Seeing flashes or floaters in your vision
  • A sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Seeing a curtain over your vision
  • Seeing halos or rainbows around light
  • Eye injury
  • Pain or redness

The general rule is if it comes on quickly, then tell us quickly!

Other symptoms requiring attention but may not be an emergency include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Red, crusty or swollen eyelids
  • Burning, dry or itchy eyes
  • Eye strain and/or mild headaches
  • Excessive eye tearing or watering
  • Difficulty seeing in the dark

Independent Prescribing

Our optometrist has further qualifications that allow prescribing the full range of medication to treat eye disease and acute eye conditions. Prescriptions are free, the same as your GP or dentist.

When attending for an emergency, we will thoroughly examine your eyes with an aim to manage your condition immediately. This may include treatment with medication or, if required, a referral to the hospital eye clinic or your GP.

To make an emergency appointment call us on 0141 558 8076 for our Springburn practice or 0141 648 6757 for our Castlemilk practice. If out of hours, contact NHS24 on 111 or attend your local accident & emergency department.
